§ 01

What we do here

Most engagements start with an idea or an existing product and a question: can this be made well, at a cost that works? From there the work runs through scope-locking, industrial design and CAD, design for manufacture, prototyping in the workshop downstairs, and on into manufacturing supply. One lean team handles all of it, so the engineer who talked through your idea is the one doing your tooling drawings.

The sectors list is long because 15 years makes it long: medical devices, consumer goods, industrial equipment, IoT hardware, furniture, sports products and a fair amount of bespoke one-off engineering that doesn’t fit a category.

§ 02

Why local matters (and when it doesn't)

Plenty of our work ships to clients we’ve never met in person. But if you’re in Brighton, Hove or nearby, being able to sit down with a prototype on the bench and argue about it is worth a lot, particularly in the early stages when the idea is still moving. The workshop at Plus X Innovation Brighton is set up for exactly that, and I lecture for the Product Design and Engineering courses at the University of Brighton up the road, so the practice is fairly well woven into the city’s design scene.

What clients say

It’s great to be able to collaborate with other businesses in Plus-X, and was a particular joy to work with Dave of Cast Iron CAD

James Kelly, Director at CmdShiftR

Dave is priceless. You give a design problem to Dave, and he solves it, which is perfect for me because I have loads of ideas and Dave’s great at putting them in perspective

Noel Sesto, Director at Control Freq

We have worked with Dave on two projects from conception to commercial sales offering. We wouldn’t have been able to get either off the ground without his vast experience, collaborative working style and dedication to support.

How an engagement starts

Usually with a conversation and then a locked scope, so you know what you’re buying before you buy it. If the idea isn’t ready for paid engineering yet, our supporting practice Innovate Engineer has a free structured sprint that will tell you what’s missing, and we’d rather point you there than invoice you early.
